Alaska recap

Since we last wrote we were just arriving to Alaska. 

Our summer was one of the best. This is for many reasons, but one in particular is the fact that we just finished a two year teaching contract. Those of you who know us and the lifestyle we use to lead, know that we are not accustomed to the "normal" working lifestyle and these past two years were really challenging in the work routing way. So the first morning, we awoke with leisure in bed, we just smiled at each other cuddled under the pile of blankets and went back to bed. We did that with some added laughter about five times before we rose for a late breakfast....we were finally relaxed and so happy to be back on our beach.

In addition to enjoying our freedom we had a very successful summer with the business. We caught lots of fish and sold a record amount of pounds direct to friends, markets and local Alaskan business. It gets even better. It was sunny almost everyday, my best friend finally visited us on the beach and spent over 2 weeks with us. We also got to spend time with our close friend Joe when he visited. We had our 8th annual art festival where a record 38 people participated. We met many more people in the community. We went out dancing and to a music festival, we saw a circus, went clamming, leisure boating and ended the season with a five day hike in the beautiful back country. These were just added bonuses to our normal summers on the beach filled with old friends, family, games and hard work. 

 

Here we are clamming; which is an insanely fun activity of digging out fast moving creatures from the sand. We harvested 185 and they were delicious!

 

Jen finally makes it to the beach! We put her right to work. Despite the fact that she was easily sea sick and puking off the side of the boat she was a trooper and helped out a lot. And for the record she is the fastest person I have ever seen to learn how to mend. (Jen- please come back and help us fix our nets.)

Nothing spells fun like ear candling...a talent passed down from my grandmother and my mother. I love it. Best part- opening the candle to see how much wax was extracted. Okay perhaps gross to you but full entertainment for myself.

Raphael, our wonderful crew member and now life-long friend is a great cook and we have a blast cooking up some pretty awesome meals together.  (oh and this is why I gained TEN pounds this summer- I am currently contemplating if it was worth it)

Aaron's sister has started a family and we get to see the kids growing up on the beach.

The circus came to town....odd.
